In the beginning of September, the hint of the winter and cold nights starts a colorshow ”Autumn foliage”. During that time trees and ground plants gets a beautiful color cover, we might see the first northern light in the sky and its perfect time to do a longer hike.
Would you like to learn hike in Finland, Sweden and Norway during the same tour? Learn how countries hiking culture, route markings, using of open huts and every man rights differ from each others? At the same time when you learn more about basic hiking skills, hike and navigate outside the paths, camp above the treeline, cross rivers, think how to prepare yourself and handle different problem situation and hike to top of the fjell to enjoy the scene.
During the Hike Trough Three Empires we hike around 80 kilometers around the Pältsan fjell area, situated in Sweden. During the six days we hike several times from country to another, enjoying the scenary of over kilometers high fjells, the spaciousness which the hike above the treeline creates together with the total peace and silence of wilderness. During the hike we also enjoy the heat of the Swedish wilderness sauna.
Time: 9-14.9.2018. We meet at Kilpisjärvi Retkeilykeskus on Sunday 9.9.2018 at 10.00 (am). On Friday 14.9.2018 we are back to Retkeilykeskus after midday
Guide: Jenni Antinaho, who has hike around the northern wilderness on her shorter and longer tours dozens of weeks during the last decade. Motto: Home is where you pitch your tent in the evening. During the last years place of the home has chanced quite many times, because of over hundred tent nights during the year.
Number of participants: 4-8 persons.
Accommodation: Own tents.
Needed experience: Day distances vary between 10-20 kilometers. Some points terrain is challenging because of the stony terrain and ascent/descent meters. Participants should be able to hike distances mentioned above while carrying all his/her 6 days equipment and food.
Own equipment: Hiking gear for longer tours. Accommodation in own tents (must handle hard winds above the treeline), own food which is prepared on a stove. Highly recommended to have hiking poles. Those are needed when crossing the rivers and on a demanding terrain.
Preliminary hiking route, final is based on weather conditions (It might be that we do the hike on opposite directions, so that we can optimize good weather for the top tour day)
Our hike starts from Kilpisjärvi from where we hike through Malla’s strict nature reserve to the open hut of Kuohkimajärvi. We camp near the hut and familiarize to the Finnish open hut culture. On the second day we continue our way toward Gappohytta which is situated in Norway. There we have a posibility to peek how Norwegian open hut culture is. After the hut we continue our way to Sweden where we camp the night.
Day three, if weather conditions are good, we do a top tour either to the top of Pältsan or Moskkugaisi fjellen. We collect ascenting/descenting meters around 1000.
During the day fourth we climp up over to thousand meters when hiking through the Isdalen walley. This is our longest day, around 20 kilometers. End of the day we have a possibility to test Swedish wilderness sauna and familiarize to Swedish open hut culture, since we camp on the yard of Pältsa hut.
During the day five we travel through the Duoibal walley toward Koltaluokta and end of the day we pick a good place to pitch our tents.
During the last day we hike to Koltaluokta, from where we take the Malla’s ferry which takes us back to Kilpisjärvi through the lake of Kilpis.
Price: 539€/person, including VAT. Price includes guiding.
Price does not include: Insurance, accommodation, food, gear needed on hike, transportation.
According to this participant must also pay following charges: Malla’s ferry (20€/person). Sauna-/tent fee on Pältsan hut. This is for the members of STF and Suomen Latu 150 Swedish krone/person and non-members 250 Swedish krone/person.

Travelin to Kilpisjärvi: Busses go straight to Kilpisjärvi from Rovaniemi (www.matkahuolto.fi). To Rovaniemi you can travel by train (www.vr.fi) or by airplane. You can also fly to Tromsö, Norway and take a buss from there (www.matkahuolto.fi). Vi vill also create facebook pages for participants. There you have a possibility to match a shared ride and this way downgrade costs and carbon footprint caused by traveling.
Accomodation on Kilpisjärvi: On Kilpisjärven Retkeilykeskus or better known as ”Retku” you can either pitch your tent on the yard or book a room. Both alternatives includes also sauna.
