Øksfjordjøkelen is the only glacier in Europe that calves directly into the sea, meaning that the boulders that break off from the glacier fall into the sea. We can admire this approximately 10 km wide glacier from the water when we paddle along the fjord to the bottom of the glacier during the tour. In addition to the glacier, we are enjoying the peace of the northern Norwegian water, as there is very little boat traffic, the mountains rising directly from the sea, fjord kayaking, clear waters and the underwater world. The area’s many waterfalls, rock gardens shaped by the ice age and fine campsites. For dinner, we can fish directly from the sea or collect mussels. During the tour, we can also see, among other things, porpoises, puffins and many white-tailed eagles and perhaps even dolphins. In the evenings, you can go on hiking trips from the camp. On this 6+1 day tour, we ain’t after kilometers but experiences. Norway’s nature, both above and below the water, offers many things to marvel at along the way.
During the tour: You will get to know Norway’s kayaking waters, nature and weather conditions. You will get to know kayaking in the tides and learn how to take this into account during a kayaking day. You will learn more about safety on the water and planning your own kayaking tour in Norway. Or you can just fully enjoy nature, stunning landscapes and kayaking.
When: The duration of the tour is 6 days plus one spare day, which will be used if wind conditions require it
Location: Kvænangen Municipality, Norway
Language: Finnish & English
Guide: Jenni Antinaho. Certified guide by NPF (Norges Padleforbund). Originally from Finland, but have moved permanently to Tromsø, Norway. Planned and paddled numerous longer kayaking tours over the years. During her wilderness guide studies, she completed a sea kayaking specialization in Finland and Norway and also gained kayaking experience in the tidal waters of Wales. In addition to seakayaking, she is also enthusiastic about surfing, rock hopping, playing in the tides and rapids
Program: Our route is formed according to the prevailing weather, and it is possible to make several different route options in the area. Day trips are 10-30km long. The organizer reserves the right to make changes to the program if the weather requires it.
Previous experience: Basics of sea kayaking. Wind and wave kayaking experience. You know how to make a wet exit in the event of a capsize and then climb back into the kayak with assistance. Fitness level and experience to paddle day trips of approximately 25 kilometers several days on a row. Days are approximately 10-25 kilometers long. Previous experience of overnight tours in the tent for longer kayaking tours. Please contact if you are wondering is your kayaking experience sufficient.
We mainly paddle in fjords, in the shelter of islands and near the coast and avoid paddling in strong winds. But since this is Norway, wind and waves cannot be completely avoided. There are also open crossings along the way, and to cross them in the wind, you need previous wind and wave paddling experience and confidence: You are comfortable in a kayak even in the waves, and with your good forward paddling technique, you can also paddle into the headwind without dropping your speed drastically.
Accommodation and meals: We will sleep all nights in the tents. There are many incredibly nice tent sites in the area. We will prepare our meals with our own camping stoves. We will be able to fill drinking water along the way from nature.
Own equipment needed for the tour: Paddling equipment (kayak with a rudder or skeg, sprayskirt, kayak life jacket (PFD), paddle). Sleeping equipment (tent, madras, sleeping back), camping stove and fuel, own food. First aid kit, map and compass. The water in the Norwegian Sea is cold even in summer (about +8 – +12 degrees) and temperatures can be anything between +8 and +30 degrees, some nights dropping even as low as +5 celsius. A drysuit is mandatory for safety reasons. You will receive a more detailed list of the necessary equipment after registration.
Kayaking equipment and drysuit: If you do not have your own kayaking equipment, the organizer has a few kayaks for rent for 1400 NOK/tour and drysuits for 1100 NOK/tour.
Equipment provided by the organizer: Necessary safety equipment provided by the organizer
Price: 7200 NOK/person. The price includes guidance and common safety equipment.
